LA MASCHERA DI PAPPOSILENO

The mask of Papposilenus

The elements linked to wine in ancient times embody the Dionysian spirit of lush vegetation, fertility and vitality. Wine is the means to achieve ‘enthousiasmosis’, i.e., the unbridled joy that removes inhibitions, returns men to their primordial and savage state, makes them dance, shout, shake and pushes them to a level of exaltation that, even if it becomes excessive, always remains a manifestation of life.

And so, in rich domus, the cheerful and carefree world of the satyrs could also be represented. Unique to its genre, the bronze Mask of Papposilenus portrays the feral appearance of the oldest of the Dionysian court. According to the myth, he lived in the woods, detested the formalities of civilised life and participated in processions singing in a melodious voice, thus encouraging Mankind to live in suspension from day-to-day concerns and enjoy a moment of serenity.
